Theory of Operation

What is a ball valve and how does a ball valve function?

Ball valves operate by opening to allow flow or closing to shut-off flow within a pipeline by way of a fitted ball inside the valve body with PTFE seats. Through the floating position of the ball, in closed position a movement into the flow direction becomes possible providing for optimum sealing in the passage (2 and 3).

There are three ball valve designs:

  • Standard - with handle without feedback - ball movement performed manually with handle
  • With handle and bracket for feedback - ball movement performed manually with handle
  • Controlled by pneumatic actuator - actuates ball movement with air connection at (1) and reset by spring force
